Practice
Marcus practises in all areas of commercial law, including insurance and reinsurance, professional negligence, company law, shipping, sale of goods and private international law.

He appears regularly in a variety of courts and in domestic and international arbitrations, both on his own and as a junior.

Recent cases and experience
Cases in which Marcus has recently been instructed include:

-  insurance and reinsurance coverage and avoidance disputes;

- professional negligence claims for and against insurance brokers and Lloyd’s Members’ and Managing Agents;

- acting on behalf of the liquidator of a hedge fund against the fund’s former directors and administrator;

- a substantial and high-profile fraud action involving a major bank;

- a dispute arising from the settlement of a claim brought by a minority shareholder alleging unfair prejudice;

- disputes in relation to the sale, carriage and storage of goods.

- shipping disputes of various kinds;

Before being called to the Bar, Marcus practised as a solicitor-advocate in the Corporate and Financial Litigation department of the City firm Lovells, where he was involved in a variety of general corporate and commercial disputes.  High-profile matters included film finance litigation, a major insolvency, the collapse of Railtrack and claims arising from losses suffered by split capital investment trusts.  He also acted in numerous smaller matters, and appeared in the County Court, Employment Tribunals (for the Free Representation Unit) and Social Security Appeal Tribunals as part of his pro bono practice.  In the course of his training contract, Marcus worked in departments specialising in insolvency, private equity, M&A, commercial litigation, information technology and intellectual property, gaining valuable experience in a broad range of contentious and non-contentious work.

During pupillage, Marcus assisted leading and junior counsel in advising, settling pleadings and preparing for interlocutory and final hearings in both court proceedings and arbitrations.  Cases with which he was involved included in particular insurance, reinsurance, shipping and other disputes arising under commercial contracts.
