General Information
MA (Cantab) Law, LLM (Cantab)

Emma read Law at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge both as an undergraduate and postgraduate. She gained a First in the LLM in Commercial Law, coming top of her year at Cambridge University in International Commercial Litigation and second in Commercial Insurance Law.  Emma was awarded the Leonard Coling Scholarship and Lyndon Stanford Prize from Sidney Sussex College.  She was selected to represent Cambridge University at both mooting and debating.
From 2005-2006 Emma was a Supervisor in Contract Law at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge University.
She has been awarded the Denning, Cassel and Hardwicke Scholarships from Lincoln’s Inn.


Practice
Emma practises in all areas of commercial law including insurance and reinsurance, shipping, international trade, conflict of laws, sale of goods and professional negligence.

Emma has appeared in the High Court and the County Court.

Insurance and reinsurance
Cases in which Emma has recently been instructed include:

  • instructed as part of a team of counsel in relation to a large reinsurance arbitration relating to a whole account excess of loss reinsurance programme;
  • advising a company on its group life insurance scheme for its employees;

General commercial
Emma has been instructed in a wide range of general commercial disputes covering areas such as sale of goods, supply of goods and services, bailment and guarantees.  Her recent instructions include appearing in a fast track trial relating to the sale of goods and various interlocutory applications in cases in which she has been instructed.

Shipping
Cases in which Emma has recently been instructed include:

  • Settled statements of case for arbitrations in laytime and demurrage disputes;
  • Advising in relation to time charter and voyage charter disputes.

Other
During pupillage, Emma assisted leading and junior counsel in advising, settling pleadings and preparing for hearings, both interlocutory and final.  Cases with which she was involved included insurance, reinsurance and shipping disputes.
