TYPES OF PUPILLAGE
We offer up to four funded 12-month pupillages each year, to successful applicants who intend to seek a tenancy at 7 King’s Bench Walk. In recent years we have taken two or three pupils per year. Chambers accepts deferred applications.
Exceptionally, we may also have vacancies for third-six pupils who have completed a twelve month pupillage elsewhere. In addition, we may offer unfunded pupillages to candidates who intend to practise abroad and do not intend to seek a tenancy in Chambers. We are also prepared to consider applications to join Chambers from established practitioners/solicitors. (Applicants for a third-six pupillage or for an unfunded pupillage, and established practitioners wishing to join Chambers, should consult our Pupillage Policy document, which can be downloaded via a link on the “Further Information” page.)
FINANCE AVAILABLE TO PUPILS
Trainee solicitors in major City firms of solicitors are well paid during their period of training and we see no reason why pupils at 7 King’s Bench Walk should not also be well rewarded. Pupillage awards of £42,000 are available for the 2009/2010 pupillage year, and awards of at least £42,000 will be made for the 2010/2011 pupillage year. Such awards may be supplemented by any fees earned during the second six months of pupillage (although pupils should not normally expect to undertake substantial work of their own during their pupillages).
We are willing to advance a proportion of the pupillage award (usually up to £10,000) on an interest-free basis for use during the Bar School year on condition that any advance will be repaid if the pupil does not pass the Bar exams or complete his or her pupillage.
Pupillage awards are payable in equal tranches at the beginning of each month of pupillage. In the event of a pupil leaving Chambers before the end of the pupillage year, the balance of any award offered will not be paid.
